Fitstream Weighted Vests - Bar-barians UK

Fitstream are functional fitness specialists, supplying top quality fitness equipment such as: Gymnastic Rings, Kettlebells, Weighted Clubs, Resistance Bands & Weighted Vests.

On the web-site, (www.fitstream.com) you will also find fitness applications and an article/exercise knowledge base.
The guys from Fitstream recently sent over a couple of their 30kg/66lbs weighted vests for the UK based Bar-barians, Jay & Lee Wade to test out during their workouts down at Primrose Hill workout park, London ... Here's what the guys had to say:

We've both trained with weighted vests/jackets before - some had been good, others a waste of time - when we got our hands on the Fitstream vest you could see straight away that it was very well made with 30 velcro fastening pockets (15 at the front and 15 at the back) each able to hold a 1kg weighted block so you can load it up with as much or as little weight as you require up to 30kg.

We started out with a little stretch off before the workout then slipped in 10kg into each of the vests and went for a little jog.
The vest's velcro and ring fastening design was easy to use and the vest fitted snugly around the torso and there was no unfastening of the velcro during the run.

We also tried out some squat thrusts, burpees and a couple of sprint bursts with the vest on, again the vest held tight during the exercises and you could really feel the intensity increase with the extra 10kg strapped to the body.

After the warm up we got into a hard weighted dip and pull up session. We loaded up one vest with 20kg and the other we maxed it out with 30kg. We started out doing supersets, 10 x pull ups with the 20kg vest then take that vest off and put on the 30 kg vest for 15 x dips - taking it in turns.

With the extra weight added the intensity of the workout went up dramatically - the vest was perfect for doing both exercises, the vest doesn't flap around like some of the jacket style ones and there was no awkwardness in the shoulder straps when performing the pull ups.

The Fitstream weighted vest is as good a vest as any we have tried out, including the Mur and BOX vests which are probably the best known brands on the market.

The vest is easy to use, the blocks easily slide in and out of the pockets but sit snugly inside. It can be taken off quickly and easily for when you want to do a drop set of pull ups, dips, press ups etc.

It's a good heavy duty, durable bit of equipment and we now train with it to build body weight/lean muscle two or three times a week as part of our routines - If you train in a gym or park, keep the vest in the boot of your car or if you train at home store it under your bed for when you need it.

We definitely recommend using a vest over a dipping belt for exercises as it distributes the weight better and has much more uses (ever tried doing a muscle up with a dipping belt and plate?)

The Fitstream weighted vest is the perfect training partner ***** (The vest can be purchased for £55/$88 from the web-site store and comes with 10 x 1kg blocks, additional blocks are also available in the store at a cost of £2/$3.20 per block)

Beginner's Advice

Start by building a foundation. These are the basics: pull-ups, dips, push ups. Follow the 3 steps below for each exercise.

Step #1 Master these basics. When perfecting the form, always remember quality over everything else. (i.e. straight form, controlled, full ROM)

Step #2 Find out how many you can do of each exercise with proper form. This will give you a baseline to work off of and grow from.

Step #3 Set goals, both short-term and long-term (i.e. # of reps, improving form etc.) If you are unable to perform a single rep, your goal may be to perform a static hold at the top of the rep for 10 seconds.

Be relentless, determined, passionate and patient (aka Bar-baric!)

Bar-barians Forum Challenge: May 2K10 "Bar-baric Pull Ups"

BAR-BARIC PULL UPS **starts May 1st - ends May 31st**

THE RULES FOR CHALLENGE:
*As many pull ups as you can manage in 5 sets.

*Each set you are allowed 1 min on the bar to do your pull ups but if you come off the bar that is it for that set.

*You are only allowed 1 min to rest in between sets - You must be back on the bar ready to go before the min has passed.

*Your pull ups must be palms facing outwards, your chin must touch the bar, you must lock out (or near as damn it on each rep) and there can only be slight leg movement or none what-so-ever on pull ups (*see video below*)

*You will have to have a time keeper with you to keep your time using a stopwatch (time starts as soon as bar is grasped and ends when feet touch the floor x 5 sets)

*You can enter the challenge as many times as you want within the month (you'll probably get better as the month goes on)

*The winner will be the person who performs the most pull ups after completing all 5 sets!

*There will also be a 'Hardest trier' award for the person who appers to have put in the most effort in their pull up video!

I think Ze is going to judge all entries and decide the two winners - He will let you know. Let's make this a worldwide comp - tell everone - Marcus Bondi and his Beach crew, Highlanderz, Bar-barians, everyone on the forum - we should all be up for this one! Tomorrow, i'll post a first attempt video to get the ball rolling - (like the pace maker in a running race)

Good luck to everyone who enters. Even if you know you can't beat someone's score - still enter as you may win the 'hardest trier' award!

Any questions, please message me: http://bar-barians.forumotions.com/profile.forum?mode=viewprofile&u=321

First Annual Bar-Commission Bar-B-Q weekend

was a success! So many people came out and we thank each and everyone of you for making this weekend so special!

It was a beautiful event. Zef, Jude, Rick and Sheriff arrived at 430am Saturday morning, on no sleep, to hold down the tables and didn't leave until 10pm. The next day we hit up TSP. Zef got the FULL PLANCHE HOLD! and then went over to Wingate to finish off the day. Long weekend full of no sleep, plenty of food, tons-o-fun and a whole lot of working out.

This vid is a thank you to all who were there, in person and in spirit.

Special thanks to Andy, Zef, Ana, Jude, Rick, Sheriff, Keith, Anthony, Jeffery, Rob, The Tech family, The Phorm family, The Lois family, The Grevenitis family, Redd, Allison, B-Rock, DOC and many more...

First Day of Summer '09

Its been raining in New York for the past month, so the first day of summer wasn't to hot. We made the best of it though. Played in the rain like a bunch of kids. Good sessions!

Hanging out at the dip bar with Guils from France, Anthony aka Nirose9, Zef, Jude and Rick of Bar-barians and Wingate's finest, Brian + the mayor of Wingate, DOC.
